She was lurking in the shadows with her fangs concealed beneath her pasty white face. She was watching me as I moved through the crowd taking photos of Hunter S. Thompson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Paris Hilton and other celebrities. After being alone in the American West for two weeks, I had stumbled into Jackson Hole Wyoming’s biggest party of the year – the Snow King Resort Halloween Party.
She came out of the shadows and introduced herself as Kerry. She asked what I was and I told her I was a vampire too. I wished her “good hunting” and I went back into the crowd to take more photos. We ran into each other again and ended up having cocktails in the motor lounge in the parking lot (link to Destiny).
After three days of hanging out together in Jackson Hole, it was time for me to get back on the open road and onward to the Pacific Coast. But we were having so much fun together. She told me that as a massage therapist she had the next month of November off work. I invited her to jump on board for the journey.
We had an obscenely fun time – camping in the West, acting creepy at Morman Temple, spending a night in a legal whore house in Nevada, meeting Ed Buryn the vagabond in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and camping in San Francisco. We laughed ourselves silly everywhere we wandered.
Ultimately our journeys took us on separate paths. But we blazed an amazing path together for several wonderful weeks on the road of life. Our time together reminds me that relationships are best measured not by their longevity but their quality and intensity. Thanks Kerry for the wonderful shared adventure and your marvelous company.
